Summary

Titanic meets The Shining in S。A。 Barnes’ Dead Silence, a SF horror novel in which a woman and her crew board a decades-lost luxury cruiser and find the wreckage of a nightmare that hasn't yet ended。

A GHOST SHIP。
A SALVAGE CREW。
UNSPEAKABLE HORRORS。

Claire Kovalik is days away from being unemployed—made obsolete—when her beacon repair crew picks up a strange distress signal。 With nothing to lose and no desire to return to Earth, Claire and her team decide to investigate。

What they find at the other end of the signal is a shock: the Aurora, a famous luxury space-liner that vanished on its maiden tour of the solar system more than twenty years ago。 A salvage claim like this could set Claire and her crew up for life。 But a quick trip through the Aurora reveals something isn’t right。

Whispers in the dark。 Flickers of movement。 Words scrawled in blood。 Claire must fight to hold onto her sanity and find out what really happened on the Aurora, before she and her crew meet the same ghastly fate。

In "Dead Silence," by S。 A。 Barnes, set in 2149, thirty-three-year-old Claire Kovalik is the team leader of a five-person crew carrying out missions in outer space。 Much to Claire's surprise, one of her subordinates picks up an automated distress signal from the ill-fated Aurora, a luxurious craft with 657 people aboard that disappeared twenty years earlier。 Rather than ignore the call or alert her superiors, Claire decides to enter the Aurora。 Doing so might be dangerous, but Kovalik knows that In "Dead Silence," by S。 A。 Barnes, set in 2149, thirty-three-year-old Claire Kovalik is the team leader of a five-person crew carrying out missions in outer space。 Much to Claire's surprise, one of her subordinates picks up an automated distress signal from the ill-fated Aurora, a luxurious craft with 657 people aboard that disappeared twenty years earlier。 Rather than ignore the call or alert her superiors, Claire decides to enter the Aurora。 Doing so might be dangerous, but Kovalik knows that they could all become rich and famous if they were to bring closure to the bereaved families and salvage some of the ship's priceless objects。 In the aftermath of this adventure, Claire returns home, but she is crushed by feelings of intense guilt。 Her commanders place her in Florida's Verux Peace and Rehabilitation Tower—a convalescent home for "broken" people—where powerful men grill her about what took place on the Aurora。 Claire claims that she cannot recall every incident and, complicating matters, she suffers from PTSD after having endured childhood traumas that left lasting scars。 This is an engrossing and graphically violent novel。 Claire, who narrates, is self-centered, reckless, and subject to wild mood swings。 In spite of her reputation as a loner, she finds herself drawn to the good-hearted Kane Behrens, a medical professional and her second-in-command who treats Claire with kindness and respect。 The book's technical language lends realism to the proceedings, and Barnes skillfully draws us in by foreshadowing the tumultuous events to come。 We eventually learn what doomed the Aurora, and the answer is as tragic as it is reprehensible。 "Dead Silence" is an eerie and shocking work of science fiction that explores the extremes to which corrupt individuals will go to achieve their goals。 。。。more

And why? And so, a team boards the Aurora to investigate。。。Yes, this is a very familiar premise - and from the start, Dead Silence reads very similar to Alien with perhaps a touch of Event Horizon。 In the second half, it also adds a dash of Aliens。。。。。。but those are not bad things, as Alien and especially Aliens are good films (Event Horizon much less so, though)。 And Dead Silence adds its own strong touches - there are many eerie moments as the investigation team makes its way through the Aurora; a later boarding party suffers a gruelling ordeal of death, destruction and madness; and the ultimate reveal of what caused the Aurora's tragedy is chilling and stunning。Alas, though, there were other things I found disappointing about Dead Silence。 In particular, the haunted main protagonist got on my nerves (although that may be more because they reminded me too much of myself at my worst)。 As previously mentioned, sometimes things can seem too much like a retread of Alien and Aliens。 As well, and especially at the end, some moments became bogged down with too much exposition。Despite those disappointments, however, I was compelled to finish Dead Silence and I don't regret doing so。 。。。more

3。5 starsFor around two thirds of this, Dead Silence was exactly what I wanted, a claustrophobic, dread filled and creepy love letter to movies like Event Horizon and Alien。 True, the lead character was a tad too angsty and full of self doubt for me, but I get it, she had a dreadful childhood。 The characters were mostly out of central casting: the troubled one, the clever one, the nice one, the arsehole one, but it didn't matter, I was gripped with the setting and the way the author had given me 3。5 starsFor around two thirds of this, Dead Silence was exactly what I wanted, a claustrophobic, dread filled and creepy love letter to movies like Event Horizon and Alien。 True, the lead character was a tad too angsty and full of self doubt for me, but I get it, she had a dreadful childhood。 The characters were mostly out of central casting: the troubled one, the clever one, the nice one, the arsehole one, but it didn't matter, I was gripped with the setting and the way the author had given me several moments of real unease, something few books have ever managed。 Then unfortunately it kind of lost its way as it became more of an action/adventure tale as the main character morphs into Super-Ripley。 That doesn't mean to say I didn't enjoy the book, and it certainly doesn't mean you won't, but it didn't for me live up to the huge promise of that beginning。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 3 for writing style, 2。5 overall。 The writing style was good。 The plot was not what I wanted。 Why was there a romantic interest? The pacing did not work for me。 It took way too long for us to be on the ghost ship, then we are off the ship and taking way too long to get back on again。 This has “real“ ghosts in a ghost story for once, but not in the way I was hoping for from reading the dust jacket。 Just overall not what I was anticipating。

Stephanie (That's What She Read)

Pretty good for the most part, but the romance was unnecessary。 Makes me want to watch Alien and Ghost Ship!

Dead Silence is a space thriller/horror which is a genre that I absolutely love and definitely need to read more of。 I enjoyed the set up and the build up of the horror as the team first arrives to the abandoned ship and things begin to unravel。 The premise sets up the kind of story that I love, a small space crew that is exhausted from a long journey in space on their way back home gets a last minute distress signal that they decide they have to check on, only for things to spiral out of their Dead Silence is a space thriller/horror which is a genre that I absolutely love and definitely need to read more of。 I enjoyed the set up and the build up of the horror as the team first arrives to the abandoned ship and things begin to unravel。 The premise sets up the kind of story that I love, a small space crew that is exhausted from a long journey in space on their way back home gets a last minute distress signal that they decide they have to check on, only for things to spiral out of their control。 I think the resolution near the end of what was causing all the horrors was a little disappointing but that's likely just my own personal preference on what I wanted to be happening to all the people on this long lost ship。 It was still interesting, just not what I had been hoping to see。 。。。more

This book was super creepy and I loved (almost) every minute of it。 There were parts where it felt like the story was dragging a little, and a major reveal that I was a little disappointed in。 Overall, it's a fantastic story and exceeded my expectations。 Very excited to read more from this author in the future。 This book was super creepy and I loved (almost) every minute of it。 There were parts where it felt like the story was dragging a little, and a major reveal that I was a little disappointed in。 Overall, it's a fantastic story and exceeded my expectations。 Very excited to read more from this author in the future。 。。。more

The first half of this book was absolute perfection (everything I've ever wanted in a space horror story!) but it lost momentum and started to drag as soon as we switched to the "now" timeline, so that's why I can't give it the full five stars。 I still liked the ending though, I grew very fond of the five members of the LINA crew, and there are several scenes from the first half in particular that will stick with me because they were just so creepy in the best way。 Also I think this should be ad The first half of this book was absolute perfection (everything I've ever wanted in a space horror story!) but it lost momentum and started to drag as soon as we switched to the "now" timeline, so that's why I can't give it the full five stars。 I still liked the ending though, I grew very fond of the five members of the LINA crew, and there are several scenes from the first half in particular that will stick with me because they were just so creepy in the best way。 Also I think this should be adapted into a TV show ASAP, it's so cinematic! 。。。more

I listened to this book on Audible。 I couldn't take the whiny narration anymore and quit halfway through。 Maybe it would be better to read a copy than listen but the story was weak so probably not。 I listened to this book on Audible。 I couldn't take the whiny narration anymore and quit halfway through。 Maybe it would be better to read a copy than listen but the story was weak so probably not。 。。。more

Felt like it was written by someone who just watched a lot of very bad sci fi movies。 Generic plot, tropes that make you roll your eyes like not just one, but two smirking antagonists, mismatched technology, corporate betrayal and an unsatisfying mystery。 To top it off, wasn’t even remotely scary or thrilling。 Was the author a writer for direct to dvd sci fi movies in the 90s and 00s? Maybe threw up a few episodes of an unremarkable SYFY or CW shows that went for a few seasons and totally forgot Felt like it was written by someone who just watched a lot of very bad sci fi movies。 Generic plot, tropes that make you roll your eyes like not just one, but two smirking antagonists, mismatched technology, corporate betrayal and an unsatisfying mystery。 To top it off, wasn’t even remotely scary or thrilling。 Was the author a writer for direct to dvd sci fi movies in the 90s and 00s? I’m not even angry, genuinely just disappointed。 When something is as bold as to claim it’s like Ghost Ship but in space, I expect it to fucking deliver。 The MC is an unreliable narrator at best and the supporting characters are cardboard cutout caricatures of real people。 The mystery was hindered by the sporadic shifts in the narrative from action to no action and back again and the atmosphere was sorely lacking。 This couldn’t decide if it wanted to lean into a plot driven story or a character I’m not even angry, genuinely just disappointed。 When something is as bold as to claim it’s like Ghost Ship but in space, I expect it to fucking deliver。 The MC is an unreliable narrator at best and the supporting characters are cardboard cutout caricatures of real people。 The mystery was hindered by the sporadic shifts in the narrative from action to no action and back again and the atmosphere was sorely lacking。 This couldn’t decide if it wanted to lean into a plot driven story or a character driven story and it ended up clashing in its failure to provide a substantial amount of either。 Overall, I just wanted this to be a smarter story than it was。 When the stakes are supposedly high, everything felt too convenient in its delivery and the mystery ended up being just too mustache twirly for me。 。。。more

This was a heart-pounding, gripping ride from start to finish。 I picked up the e-book on a whim yesterday, and absolutely didn't stop until I was done。 What an unputdownable one Dead Silence was! 。。。more
